When discussing the history of Sykes-Pickavant, one name stands out as a pivotal figure in the company's development: Joe Sykes.
While relatively little is known about Joe Sykes' early life, the archive shows that he was an important figure in the automotive tool industry during the first half of the twentieth century. His career began with J W Pickavant and later led to the creation of his own successful business, helping to establish the foundations of what would become Sykes-Pickavant.
Around 1919–1920, Joe Sykes was recruited by J W Pickavant & Co. as a salesman. At this time the company was still in its early years and had not yet become a limited company, a change that would come in 1921.
Joe's connection to the business was strengthened through family ties. Archive records indicate that he married a school friend of J W Pickavant's wife, creating a personal as well as professional link between the two families.
When J W Pickavant & Co. became a limited company in 1921, the first directors were listed as J W Pickavant, W P, Millicent Baker, Justin and Marcus Mindelsohn. While Joe does not appear among the shareholders or directors, it is believed he continued to play an important role in the business, serving as a salesman covering the northern counties.
Joe's talent and ambition eventually led him to establish a company of his own.
By 1931, records suggest that he had left J W Pickavant to set up a separate enterprise. This is confirmed by company records and later references in Sykes-Pickavant archives.
In 1939, Joe officially registered J F Sykes (St Annes) Limited. The company offered a broad range of workshop and service tools, including products that competed directly with those sold by J W Pickavant. The catalogue also featured a wide selection of imported tools from America, including respected brands such as K-D and Herbrand, known for their innovative automotive service equipment.
Joe's company became a true family enterprise. Over time, leadership passed to his son Peter Sykes, who continued to develop the business and strengthen its position within the automotive tool industry.
The relationship between the Sykes and Pickavant businesses eventually came full circle. In 1968, Peter Sykes and Paul Mindelsohn agreed to merge their respective companies. The newly formed Sykes-Pickavant Ltd officially began trading on 1 January 1969, with Peter and Paul serving as Joint Managing Directors.
Sadly, Joe Sykes passed away in 1965, just a few years before the merger that would unite the two businesses. Although he did not live to see the creation of Sykes-Pickavant, his entrepreneurial journey laid much of the groundwork for what would become one of the automotive aftermarket's most recognised names.
Joe's influence continued through his family and the company he built. His vision, determination and commitment to serving the automotive trade helped create a legacy that remains part of Sykes-Pickavant's history today.
More than a salesman, Joe Sykes was a businessman, founder and pioneer whose story forms an important chapter in the evolution of the company.
