SP Archive Spotlight: Jack Webster – Driving Growth Through Engineering and Leadership

This month in our SPArchive Spotlight, we're looking back at the career of Jack Webster, whose technical expertise, commercial insight and leadership helped shape Sykes-Pickavant during a period of significant growth.

Originally from Liverpool, Jack trained as an engineer, though he often said he would have preferred to study architecture, something he saw as combining creativity with practicality. This balance of technical skill and creative thinking went on to shape his career.

After completing a five-year apprenticeship in the motor trade and serving for two years in the Royal Air Force, Jack joined the Austin Motor Company in Birmingham as a Technical Correspondent, helping customers solve technical problems and answering product queries.

Recognising greater opportunities in sales and marketing, Jack joined Paul Mindelsohn in 1957 as a Sales Representative. Just four years later, as the Sykes-Pickavant sales team expanded, he was promoted to Assistant Sales Manager, before progressing to Sales Manager.

Jack's practical engineering knowledge, combined with his extensive commercial experience, saw him appointed Commercial Director, where he took responsibility for purchasing and factory operations. He later became Marketing Director, playing a key role in promoting both the company and its products.

Beyond Sykes-Pickavant, Jack was a passionate advocate for the automotive industry. He was an active member of the Garage Equipment Association (GEA), contributing to committees covering publicity, exhibitions, membership and industry statistics. After serving on the GEA's governing Council for seven years, Jack was elected President of the Garage Equipment Association in 1987, a testament to the respect he earned across the industry.

Away from work, Jack enjoyed spending time with his wife, Sue, at their cottage in the Lake District. Whether sailing, shooting or building model boats, he embraced hobbies that reflected the same precision and craftsmanship he brought to his professional life.

Jack Webster's journey from apprentice engineer to industry leader is a wonderful example of the talent, ambition and dedication that have helped shape Sykes-Pickavant's history. His contributions continue to form an important part of our SPArchive, reminding us of the people whose passion and expertise built the company we know today.
