Sykes Pickavant Through the Years: 1990–2010

4 min reading time

The two decades from 1990 to 2010 marked one of the most transformative periods in Sykes Pickavant's history. As vehicle technology evolved at an unprecedented pace, so too did the business, embracing innovation, expanding its product range, navigating changes in ownership, and ultimately returning to its independent roots.

1990–2000: Embracing the Electronic Revolution

If the 1980s were a period of growth for Sykes Pickavant, the 1990s would prove to be even more significant.

The automotive industry was entering a new era. Electronic fuel injection, engine management systems and increasingly stringent emissions regulations were replacing traditional mechanical systems, fundamentally changing the way vehicles were diagnosed and repaired. Independent garages needed new tools and new skills to keep pace, and Sykes Pickavant was determined to lead the way.

To support this technological shift, the company significantly expanded its product portfolio. Alongside its established range of gauge-based diagnostic equipment, Sykes Pickavant introduced an entirely new range of electronic diagnostic products. This major step forward required investment in new talent, a new manufacturing facility in Melksham, and a renewed focus on electronic innovation.

A Landmark Innovation: The Advanced Code Reader

One of the defining moments of the decade came in 1990 with the launch of the Advanced Code Reader (ACR).

Designed to connect to the new diagnostic sockets appea

ring on modern vehicles, the ACR gave independent workshops an affordable entry point into electronic vehicle diagnostics. At a time when many garages were facing the challenge of adapting to rapidly advancing vehicle technology, the ACR provided a practical, accessible solution.

The product quickly established itself as a market leader, selling thousands of units and becoming one of the UK's most successful handheld diagnostic tools. Its success reinforced Sykes Pickavant's reputation as an innovator in automotive workshop equipment.

Building on this momentum, the company introduced its "Suitcase Diagnostics" programme in 1991, further strengthening its position as a leader in portable diagnostic equipment.

Expanding the Business

Growth during the decade extended beyond product development.

Sykes Pickavant acquired several specialist businesses operating within the automotive diagnostic sector, including Engine Test Technique, A M Test Systems, and Motor Test GmbH in Germany. These acquisitions broadened the company's technical expertise and strengthened its presence in both the UK and European markets.

At the same time, emissions testing equipment was added to the product range to support the growing demand for petrol and diesel MOT testing, ensuring workshops had the tools needed to meet new legislative requirements.

As the product portfolio expanded, so did customer demand for comprehensive product information. Distributor catalogues grew into substantial A4 publications of more than 360 pages, while tens of thousands of A5 workshop catalogues were produced to support mechanics and technicians across the country.

Joining the Facom Group

Following its successful public listing in the 1980s, Sykes Pickavant attracted interest from larger international organisations.

In 1996, the company was acquired by the renowned French hand tool manufacturer Facom. A key attraction for Facom was Sykes Pickavant's expertise in electronic diagnostics, particularly the highly successful ACR, which complemented Facom's existing hand tool portfolio.

The acquisition created strong advantages, combining automotive service tools with Facom's established European distribution network. Under the Facom brand, the ACR reached an even wider international audience and enjoyed significantly expanded export opportunities.

The same year also marked Sykes Pickavant's 75th anniversary. To celebrate the milestone, the company organised a nationwide roadshow across eight major transport museums throughout the UK, a memorable event that remains fondly remembered by those who took part.

2000–2010: Returning to Independence

The early years of the new millennium saw continued product development, regular catalogue updates and ongoing success for the ACR.

However, another significant change arrived in 2005, with Facom considering divesting Sykes Pickavant and talks taking place , it was itself acquired by US-based tool manufacturer Stanley. Stanley's primary focus was the hand tools business, and it became clear that the Sykes Pickavant divestment was ok to proceed.

This presented an opportunity for a small UK management team to complete the purchase of the business and restore Sykes Pickavant as an independent British company.

The management buyout marked an important turning point in the company's history, allowing the business to focus entirely on its own product development, customer relationships and long-term strategy.

A New Global Focus

Alongside the re-establishment of the UK business, Sykes-Pickavant Export was created as a separate company dedicated to international markets.

While operating independently, both businesses continued to collaborate closely on product development and shared the same commitment to providing high-quality automotive service tools and equipment to customers around the world.

Building Towards a Century of Success

The return to independent ownership proved to be a pivotal moment. It enabled Sykes Pickavant to continue building on its heritage while remaining agile enough to respond to the changing needs of the automotive industry.

Perhaps most importantly, it laid the foundations for the company to celebrate an extraordinary milestone, its 100th anniversary. Reaching a century in business is a remarkable achievement and reflects Sykes Pickavant's enduring commitment to innovation, quality and supporting the automotive and industrial trades through generations of technological change.
