The Heritage Skills Academy aims to address the growing need for skilled workers in the heritage vehicle restoration sector, a field where the demand for expertise is greater than ever. They offer specialized apprenticeships in partnership with some of the UK's leading restoration businesses. The academy provides an immersive learning experience that combines practical, hands-on training in the workshop with theoretical knowledge at the college. This blend ensures that apprentices gain both the technical and creative skills needed to excel in classic car restoration.

At the heart of the academy’s mission is the goal of testing and refining the craftsmanship that goes into the restoration of vintage vehicles. With techniques like TIG welding, gas welding, advanced metal fabrication, and bespoke part creation (such as buck making), apprentices are challenged to push the boundaries of their abilities while learning time-honoured skills. Each apprentice’s journey is a deep dive into precision, creativity, and the patience required to bring a classic car back to life.

A Journey of Passion and Craftsmanship: Apprenticeship Testimonials

Aaron Richardson – Coach 6 – Precision Panel Craft

Aaron Richardson - student holding project completed with the Heritage Skills Academy

“From the age of 17, heritage vehicles have been a passion of mine and a huge part of my

life. At 19, I started working in a local classic car restoration business in Northern Ireland. After a year, I felt like I was no longer developing my skills at this place and started looking online for opportunities. That’s when I stumbled across the Heritage Skills Academy and after securing a place in Cohort 6 and a job at Precision Panel Craft in Hastings – I made the move to England.”

“In the past year, I’ve learnt skills that I never would have had the opportunity to learn at home in Ireland. Such as TIG welding, gas welding, advanced metal fabrication (wheeling etc.), buck making… the list goes on. Over the past year, through both learning at college and from lessons with my mentor at work, I’ve gained a lot of knowledge and experience. After another couple of years under my belt, I should be well set up for a lasting career in the world of classic car restoration."
